Dr. Petersen's research focuses on youth as victims and offenders and the nexus between them. She has published widely in the areas of juvenile justice and gangs, criminal justice policy, corrections and intimate partner violence. Dr. Petersen's continuing research focuses on community gang partnerships, open juvenile courts, waiver of youth to the adult system and collaboration with KSUs Center for Sustainable Journalism, Juvenile Justice Information Exchange. She holds membership in numerous academic associations, including the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Southern Criminal Justice Association and received numerous teaching awards or honors.
